Interesting facts about Transformers

 

Transformers were developed in Year 1880. Transformers are integral part of electrical field. Without Transformers transmission of electrical supply will become cumbersome.  There are few interesting facts about transformer which you must know about them:-

(i)                 Transformers doesn’t work in DC:-

We have seen that Transformers are working on alternating current i.e. AC and we have never seen that Transformer will work in DC. The reason is that in DC there is no time varying field as in DC current/Voltage remains constant. Since there is no varying field so there is no relative motion between coil and core of transformer which is required for production of induced EMF(electro motive force). This results into no transfer of power from primary to secondary.

Transformer has high inductance and very low resistance. In DC there is no inductance and there is only resistance. So which will leads to very high flow of current in Transformer primary circuit and which will leads to burning of Transformer.

(ii)               Transformers are connected in Parallel instead of series:-

In all industries or electricity department always go for parallel operation of transformers as load get divided between transformers when connected load at transformer output is increase than its capacity than parallel one another transformer is inserted in the circuit to divide the load among transformers.

Parallel Operation further increases reliability of the circuit without using a single large capacity transformer. When we connect the transformers in series then in series as we know current remains the same so no load sharing will occur and even one transformer of circuit get faulty whole transformers will not function and leads to disruption of whole electricity supply.

(iii)             It is always preferred to use copper wound transformers instead of Aluminum Transformers:-

There are following advantages of copper above aluminum i.e. why copper wound transformers are used:-

(a)    Copper is hard, strong and are ductile than aluminum

(b)   Transformer with same rating and performance as that of copper wound, aluminum wound transformer are required of bigger size and leads to higher costing as cost of steel, tank and oil will get increased.  With the same rating transformer, aluminum transformer cross section get increase by 1.6-1.8 times. This is also due to high resistivity of aluminum.  

(c)    Copper also improves energy performance of Transformer.

               

(iv)              Transformers are always stationary:-

Transformer don’t have any rotating parts, Unlike motors and generators where motion of armature is required to generate output, Transformer coils are wound around the iron core which are stationary. The whole transformer is enclosed in tank.

 

(v)                Material of Transformer tank:-

Transformer tank is made from steel. It is made from carbon steel (mild steel).

Question arises than why not Transformer body develops current on its Transformer tank?

There is transformer oil between Transformer primary and secondary coil and between body of transformer and coils. This oil provides insulation from conductivity. So Transformer body never develops any current on its body.
