Andaman and Nicobar Interesting facts

 

In this we will discuss about interesting facts about Andaman and Nicobar Islands. These islands are part of India and it has around about 572 islands. These islands are situated in Bay of Bengal. Its Capital and largest city is Port Blair.

1.       Here at this island language spoken is Bengali there after Hindi.

2.       World largest Turtles nests here. The species name is Leather back or Dermocheleys Coriacea. Their weight is around 500 kg and are about 1.8 meters in length. Their Population in Nicobar island is about 1000 turtles. Apart from Leatherback turtles there are other marine turtle which nests here are Green Turtle and Hawksbill.

3.       There is one of the oldest living Tribes living there they are living here from more than 60000 years and their population is around 300 only and they live on North Sentinel Island. The humans live there are considered as most isolated population in the world. They even attack anyone who tries to came in close contact with them with arrows.  In 1950s Indian government strictly prohibited the visitor’s entry into this island.



These tribes are also named as “Paleolithic Tribes”

4.       The name Andaman and Nicobar name arrived from Andaman which is derived from Handuman as during Ramayana time it was called as Handuman. The other part i.e. Nicobar is derived from South India term Nakkavaram meaning of which is Land of Naked.

5.       This island Dugong is the state Animal and is also known as Sea cow. This is mainly found on this island only. This is also known as Angel of Sea. This animal is Herbivorous its main diet is Grass in the Sea. Their no. is only 50.

6.       During British times this island was used as a harsh punishment place for people naming as Kala Pani and people who were sent for punishment here were Named as “Saza e Kala Pani”. It was named as Kala Pani as ocean here is very deep and is having black colour. The jail here is now made a National Memorial and is situated in Port Blair. It was believed earlier that person sent here for punishment in Jail never ever returned back. This jail was established after revolt of 1857.

7.        Fishing for commercial activities is completely banned here.

8.       There is an active volcano here naming as “The Barren Island” present here. This volcano is only active volcano of India.

9.       If you are an Indian than you will surprised to find that 20-rupee note issued by India as currency note have picture of Andaman Nicobar island. The view shown in note can be seen from on the way to Mount Harriet, this mountain is second highest peak in this island after Saddle which is 737 meters in height and is on North Andaman.

10.   The Ross Island was made as British Headquarters in 1858 till 1941, in 1941 it was rocked by earthquake there after British shifted from here during world war II, this place was used by Japan as POW camp and even used for War installations.

11.   There is an Island naming as Katchal Island which received first sun rise of the millennium.  

12.    There are 2 water falls also there names of the same are:-

(a)    White Surf falls

(b)    Whisper Waves

13.   There are 4 airstrips and 6 water Aerodromes at Andaman & Nicobar.

14.   This island is home to world largest crabs in the world. These crabs are naming as Hermit Crabs.

15.   There is also a mud volcano. This volcano is situated on Baratang Island. This is formed due to chemical reaction between Grass and Water.

16.   India first commercial Seaplane was launched here and it was named as Jal Hans.
