Technical Specifications for Flameproof Distribution Boards and Lighting Fixtures

1.0 Flameproof Distribution Boards – Size, Power & Specifications

The distribution system includes cable laying, termination, and associated works.



1.0.1 Scope

This specification covers the supply, installation, and testing of the following equipment for the proposed project:

  • Flameproof distribution boards

  • Flameproof lighting fixtures

  • Flameproof exhaust fans

  • Flameproof switches with cable termination boxes

  • Flameproof plug and socket outlets

1.0.2 General Information

The objective of this specification is to define the requirements for:

  • Utility distribution boards

  • Lighting distribution boards

  • Flameproof lighting and control gear

  • Plug sockets, DP switches, junction boxes

  • FRLS cables, cable glands, lugs

  • Motors and other electrical accessories suitable for hazardous areas

All components forming part of the electrical distribution system must be manufactured and tested as per IS 2148 or equivalent international standards.

1.0.3 Codes and Standards

All flameproof fittings shall comply with the latest revisions of applicable Indian Standards (IS) and International Standards where IS is not available. Key standards include:

  • IS 2206 (Part I – 1984): Flameproof electrical lighting fittings – Glass and bulkhead type

  • IS 2206 (Part II – 1976): Flameproof tube light fittings

  • IS 2206 (Part IV – 1987): Portable flameproof hand lamps

  • IS 4012/1967 & IS 4013/1967: Dust-proof and dust-tight electric fittings

  • IS 4821/1968: Cable glands and sealing boxes for mines

  • IS 6789/1972: Bolted flameproof cable couplers and adapters

  • IS 8224/1976: Lighting fittings for Division 2 hazardous areas

  • IS 8945/1987: Electrical measuring instruments for explosive gas atmospheres

  • IS 9099/1980: Performance tests of battery-operated trucks in hazardous areas

  • IS 9628/1980: Three-phase induction motors (protection type ‘n’)

Wherever Indian Standards are unavailable, IEC / International standards shall be followed.

1.0.4 Design Criteria

  1. Lighting fixtures, exhaust fans, and switches shall conform to approved layout drawings.

  2. All distribution boards, fittings, sockets, DP switches, cables, and junction boxes shall be certified by CMRS, Dhanbad / CCE (PESO), Nagpur – India, or equivalent authorities of the country of origin.

  3. Fixtures and junction boxes shall be weatherproof (IP-55 / NEMA-4 or equivalent). Temperature class shall generally be T3 unless otherwise specified.

  4. Fixtures shall be of sheet steel, vitreous enameled with approved reflectors. All fittings except flood lights shall be provided with protective wire guards (50x50 mm mesh). Glass used shall be clear, heat-resistant, and suitable for hazardous locations.

  5. Junction boxes shall be flameproof, fitted with anti-loosening terminals, and allow sufficient space for termination. They must include earthing terminals and mounting lugs.

  6. Flameproof, double compression type nickel/chromium plated brass cable glands shall be provided. Lugs shall be of tinned copper crimping type.

  7. All fixtures shall undergo visual inspection and testing for workmanship. The company reserves the right to witness final testing with 7 days’ prior notice.

  8. All flameproof lighting fittings shall be non-integral type.

1.0.5 Guarantee

All supplied equipment shall be guaranteed for compliance with IS 2148 (as applicable).

1.0.6 Certification

All boards, fittings, and junction boxes shall be tested and certified by CCE, Nagpur / CMRS, Dhanbad or equivalent authorized agencies.


1.2 Specifications for Lighting Fittings and Accessories

1.2.1 Scope

This section covers the selection, inspection, testing, supply, and installation of flameproof lighting fittings and related accessories at site.

1.2.2 Standards

Lighting fittings and accessories shall comply with latest applicable IS/IEC standards. Where standards are not available, test certificates and proven quality will be mandatory.

1.2.3 General Requirements

  • Fixtures shall be designed for continuous, trouble-free operation without reduction in lamp life.

  • Outdoor fittings shall be weatherproof and rainproof.

  • Fixtures must be designed for easy maintenance and lamp replacement.

  • Connections between components shall withstand vibrations.

  • Each fitting shall be supplied with appropriate lamps, starters, ballasts, and capacitors.

  • Heat rise above ambient shall conform to relevant standards.

  • Fluorescent fittings shall include power factor correction capacitors to avoid stroboscopic effect.

  • All fittings must include earthing terminals.

1.2.4 Earthing

All metallic enclosures and housings shall be provided with proper earthing connections to ensure continuity.

1.2.5 Painting / Finish

  • All surfaces shall be cleaned, de-greased, and enamel coated (Stove-enameled / Epoxy-coated / Powder-coated).

  • Reflectors shall be vitreous enameled, anodized aluminum, or mirror-polished as per design.

  • All hardware shall be cadmium plated for corrosion resistance.

1.2.6 Types of Fittings

a) Industrial Fittings

  • Suitable for incandescent, fluorescent, mercury vapor, sodium vapor, or metal halide lamps.

  • Light distribution: minimum 80% in lower hemisphere.

  • Reflector efficiency: 60–80% depending on lamp type.

b) Bulkhead and Well Glass Fittings

  • Suitable for corridors, staircases, porches, and low-ceiling areas.

  • Made of cast aluminum alloy housing with heat-resistant prismatic glass and protective wire guard.

c) High Bay / Low Bay Fittings

  • Suitable for warehouses and workshops with suspension mounting.

  • Can accommodate up to 400W mercury vapor / metal halide lamps with integral control gear housing.

1.2.7 Accessories

  • Reflectors: Made of CRCA sheet steel / aluminum, stove-enameled or anodized. Flameproof fittings must not use aluminum paint.

  • Lamp Holders: Comply with IS standards, spring-loaded bi-pin type for fluorescent lamps.

  • Starters: Bimetal electrode type with brass contacts and radio-interference capacitor.

  • Ballasts (Chokes): Heavy-duty, vibration-resistant, electronic / magnetic type, tested per IS standards.

  • Capacitors: To maintain power factor ≥ 0.95, enclosed in metallic housing.

  • Lamps: Fluorescent lamps shall be “Cool Daylight” type, 3250 lumens output, with tri-band phosphor coating.

1.2.8 Spares

Unit prices for lamps, ballasts, holders, starters, capacitors, and accessories shall be quoted separately with catalog numbers.

1.2.9 Testing & Reports

  • All fittings and accessories shall undergo type, routine, and acceptance tests as per relevant standards.

  • Manufacturers shall furnish valid test certificates along with supply.
