Things to be considered before buying Washing Machine

I would not choose a washing machine only by brand, star rating or discount. The correct choice depends on water availability, family size, usage, electricity, floor space, fabric type, and service support.

Current manufacturer guidance also broadly supports this: front-load machines generally offer better water/energy efficiency and fabric care, while top-load machines are easier to load and semi-automatic machines are practical where water supply is irregular. LG CH_DE

1. First understand the four choices

Type

Best for

Water

Electricity

Convenience

Typical weakness

Semi-automatic

Budget + irregular water

⭐⭐⭐⭐

⭐⭐⭐⭐

⭐⭐

Manual transfer

Fully automatic Top Load

Easy everyday washing

⭐⭐⭐

⭐⭐⭐⭐

Usually more water than front-load

Fully automatic Front Load

Best overall washing/efficiency

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Higher initial cost; bending to load

Washer-Dryer Combo

Apartments/monsoon/limited drying space

⭐⭐⭐⭐

⭐⭐⭐

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Expensive; drying capacity often lower

A particularly important point: don't assume "fully automatic" automatically means low water consumption. Front-load and top-load machines can differ substantially. For example, BEE-declared figures cited by LG show a particular front-loader at about 7.2 L/kg/cycle versus about 17.24 L/kg/cycle for a particular top-loader. Actual consumption depends on program and load. LG CH_DE

2. Semi-Automatic — who should buy?

Choose this if:

  • Water supply is irregular
  • You use tanker/water storage
  • You want to control exactly how much water goes into the machine
  • Budget is around ₹10,000–₹18,000
  • You don't mind manually shifting clothes from wash tub to spin tub
  • You want relatively simple construction and potentially easier repairs
  • You wash clothes in multiple batches

Major advantage

The wash and spin tubs are separate, so you can wash one batch while another batch is spinning.

Electrical engineer's view

Semi-automatic machines generally have simpler electrical/mechanical architecture than sophisticated fully automatic machines. That can make them attractive where service infrastructure is limited.

But remember

You have to:

Fill → Wash → Drain → Transfer → Spin → Remove

So if convenience is important, this becomes irritating over several years.

3. Fully Automatic Top Load — the "easy Indian household" option

This is probably the best compromise for many families.

You put clothes in → add detergent → select program → start.

No manual transfer.

Buy Top Load if:

  • Elderly people use the machine
  • You don't want to bend down
  • You want relatively quick washing
  • You frequently add forgotten clothes
  • You prefer simple operation
  • Your budget is around ₹17,000–₹30,000
  • Water consumption isn't your primary concern

Top-load machines are easier to load because you don't need to bend down, and some designs allow adding clothes during the wash. Bosch Home

Particularly good for

Parents / elderly users

If someone has difficulty bending, I would actually give top-load a strong preference.

4. Fully Automatic Front Load — my overall choice

If you ask me:

"I have adequate water supply, reasonable budget and want the best long-term machine."

I would generally choose a 5-star inverter front-loader.

Advantages

✅ Lower water consumption
✅ Excellent cleaning
✅ Better fabric care
✅ Generally better control of temperature
✅ High spin speeds → clothes come out relatively drier
✅ Excellent for towels, bedsheets and mixed loads
✅ Better suited to long-term energy/water efficiency

Bosch also describes front-load machines as more efficient in water and electricity consumption and gentler on clothing because of their tumble-wash action. Bosch Home

Disadvantages

❌ Higher purchase price
❌ You have to bend down
❌ Longer wash cycles are common
❌ Door/gasket needs cleaning and drying
❌ Requires appropriate installation and drainage
❌ Service/repairs can be more expensive

5. What capacity should you buy?

This is more important than many fancy features.

A useful starting point is:

Family

Recommended

1–2 people

6–7 kg

3–4 people

7–9 kg

5–6 people

9–11 kg

7+ / joint family

11–12+ kg

These ranges are broadly consistent with current manufacturer buying guidance. LG CH_DE

My practical recommendation

2 people → 7 kg

3–4 people → 8 kg

4–5 people + frequent bedsheets → 9 kg

5–6 people → 9–10 kg

Don't buy 12 kg simply because it's available.

A machine that is substantially oversized for your normal load isn't necessarily economical.

6. The MOST important things to check before buying

A. Motor

Prefer:

Inverter / BLDC / Direct Drive motor

Advantages include:

  • Better efficiency
  • Lower noise
  • Better speed control
  • Potentially lower mechanical wear

But don't buy a machine merely because the salesperson says "Inverter Motor."

Check: Motor warranty + complete machine warranty.

A 10-year motor warranty doesn't necessarily mean the entire washing machine has a 10-year warranty.

7. BEE rating

Look for the BEE energy label and compare the actual consumption figures rather than simply saying: "5 Star = best."

If two machines are both 5-star, compare their declared annual energy consumption and water consumption.

For a machine running 250–300 cycles/year, small efficiency differences accumulate over several years.

8. Water pressure — very important

This is often ignored.

Before buying a front-load machine, check:

Water pressure

If you live on a high floor or have a weak overhead-tank supply, verify the machine's minimum required inlet pressure.

For example, LG's current guide specifies a pressure range for its front-loaders and specifically advises high-floor apartment users to check pressure. LG CH_DE

If water pressure is inadequate:

Booster pump / suitable plumbing arrangement may be required.

9. Hard water

This is particularly relevant in many Indian cities.

Hard water can cause:

  • Scale formation
  • Heater deposits
  • Detergent residue
  • Reduced heating efficiency
  • Longer-term component problems

Therefore, if your area has hard water, look for:

Hard-water wash / suitable descaling provisions / good drum and heater design.

Don't blindly pay ₹10,000 extra for a marketing feature claiming "hard-water technology."

10. Heater — should you buy it?

For a front-loader:

Yes, I generally recommend an in-built heater.

Hot/warm water can be useful for:

  • Towels
  • Bedsheets
  • Baby clothes
  • Heavily soiled clothes
  • Hygiene-oriented washing

But don't use high temperatures for every fabric.

For normal Indian laundry, most cycles don't require very hot water.

11. RPM — don't chase the highest number

You'll commonly see: 700 / 800 / 1000 / 1200 / 1400 RPM

Higher spin speed generally means more water extraction.

But: 1200 RPM is already very good for a normal household.

I wouldn't pay a huge premium just to move from 1200 → 1400 RPM unless you have a specific reason.

12. Drum material

Prefer:

Good-quality stainless-steel drum

Avoid making the decision solely on drum design marketing terms.

More important:

  • Drum quality
  • Bearings
  • Door seal
  • Suspension
  • Motor
  • Service availability

13. Don't get fooled by 20–30 washing programs

You don't need 30 programs.

For most households, these are enough:

Cotton
Mixed
Quick
Delicate
Wool
Bedsheet
Heavy
Rinse + Spin

A machine with 15 useful programs can be better than one with 35 programs you'll never use.

14. Wi-Fi / AI / App control — low priority

My ranking would be:

Spend money on:

  1. Better motor
  2. Better drum
  3. Higher efficiency
  4. Heater
  5. Better suspension
  6. Good warranty
  7. Strong service network

Then consider Wi-Fi/AI.

Being able to start your washing machine from your smartphone is nice.

But it won't make a poor washing machine a good one.

15. Noise and vibration

Very important for:

  • Apartments
  • Bedrooms next to laundry area
  • Night washing

Check:

Noise during wash + noise during spin.

More importantly, the machine must be installed on a properly levelled, solid floor. Manufacturer installation guidance also emphasizes a flat, level surface and appropriate power, water and drainage connections. LG CH_DE

16. Electrical safety — my engineer's checklist ⚡

This part is extremely important.

Ensure:

15A properly earthed socket

Do NOT use:

❌ Cheap extension board
❌ Loose socket
❌ Multi-plug adapter
❌ Unreliable earthing

Ideally:

Dedicated 15A circuit → MCB → properly earthed socket → washing machine

Also check the electrical installation if you have:

  • Frequent voltage fluctuations
  • Generator/inverter supply
  • Poor earthing
  • Very old wiring

Don't automatically buy an external voltage stabilizer without checking the machine's specified operating range and manufacturer recommendation.

17. Drainage is equally important

Before delivery, check:

Water inlet location

Drain location

Drain hose height

Floor drain

Space behind machine

A surprisingly large number of installation problems are actually plumbing problems.

18. Measure the space BEFORE ordering

Don't just measure the machine.

Measure:

·         Width

·         Depth

·         Height

·         Door opening

·         Passage width

·         Stair/lift dimensions

For front load:

Door swing clearance is critical.

For top load:

You need sufficient clearance above the machine to open the lid.

19. Service network — extremely important

I'd put this in the top 5 buying criteria.

Before buying, search: Brand + washing machine service + your city

Ask: "If the machine develops a problem after 3 years, who will repair it?"

A ₹3,000 cheaper machine is not cheaper if parts/service are difficult to obtain.

LG itself recommends checking after-sales service availability before purchase. LG CH_DE

Situation 5

Elderly parents ➡️ Top Load

Situation 6

Very limited water ➡️ Front Load, provided water pressure/plumbing is adequate.

Situation 7

Irregular water supply ➡️ Semi-automatic

Situation 8

Premium household + maximum fabric care ➡️ Front Load

Situation 9

Apartment + monsoon + clothes don't dry easily ➡️ Washer-Dryer Combo, if budget and drying-cycle limitations are acceptable.

21. My ranking

If I were buying for my own home:

Best overall -8 kg 5-star Inverter Front Load

Best value/convenience- 8 kg 5-star Inverter Top Load

Best budget + irregular water-7–8 kg 5-star Semi-Automatic

Premium-9–10 kg Front Load / Washer-Dryer

One very important buying principle

Don't compare machines like this:

"This one has AI, 25 programs, Wi-Fi and 1400 RPM."

Instead compare:

Capacity → water consumption → electricity consumption → motor → heater → RPM → noise → warranty → service → spare parts → installation requirements → price.

That gives you a much more rational purchase.
