Voltage regulation of Transformer

Voltage Regulation of Transformers

Introduction

Voltage regulation is an important performance parameter of a transformer. It indicates how much the secondary terminal voltage changes as the load varies, while the primary input voltage remains constant.

In simple words:
πŸ‘‰ Voltage Regulation = % change in secondary voltage from no-load to full-load condition.

Good transformers are expected to have low voltage regulation, meaning they maintain nearly constant secondary voltage under varying load conditions.

Definition of Voltage Regulation of Transformer

Voltage regulation of a transformer is defined as:

Voltage Regulation=Vno load−Vfull loadVno load\text{Voltage Regulation} = \frac{V_{no\ load} - V_{full\ load}}{V_{no\ load}}

Where:

  • Vno loadV_{no\ load} = Secondary terminal voltage at no load

  • Vfull loadV_{full\ load} = Secondary terminal voltage at full load

Types of Voltage Regulation

  1. Down Regulation (most common in practice):
    When load is connected, the secondary voltage drops due to internal impedance of the transformer.

    Formula:

    %Regulation (Down)=Vno load−Vfull loadVno load×100\% \text{Regulation (Down)} = \frac{V_{no\ load} - V_{full\ load}}{V_{no\ load}} \times 100
  2. Up Regulation (less common):
    In some leading power factor loads (like capacitive loads), the secondary voltage may rise when load is applied.

    Formula:

    %Regulation (Up)=Vno load−Vfull loadVfull load×100\% \text{Regulation (Up)} = \frac{V_{no\ load} - V_{full\ load}}{V_{full\ load}} \times 100

Example Calculation

Suppose a single-phase transformer has:

  • No-load secondary voltage (Vno loadV_{no\ load}) = 230 V

  • Full-load secondary voltage (Vfull loadV_{full\ load}) = 210 V

Then:

%Regulation=230−210230×100\% \text{Regulation} = \frac{230 - 210}{230} \times 100 =20230×100=8.69%= \frac{20}{230} \times 100 = 8.69\%

πŸ‘‰ The transformer has 8.69% voltage regulation.

Significance of Voltage Regulation

  • Low regulation (%) → Better transformer performance.

  • Typical range: 0.5% to 5% for large power transformers.

  • High regulation means large voltage drop, poor efficiency in supplying constant voltage.

Practical Notes for Engineers

  • Voltage regulation depends on power factor of the load:

    • Lagging power factor → Voltage drop (positive regulation).

    • Leading power factor → Voltage rise (negative regulation).

  • Efficiency and regulation are two key parameters considered in transformer design and testing.

✅ Summary:
Voltage regulation of a transformer shows how much the output voltage changes from no-load to full-load. It is ideally low, ensuring stable voltage supply to loads.

For 150 hp load of machine how much kva transformer required

How to Calculate Transformer Rating for a Particular Machine Load

When selecting a transformer for a machine, you cannot directly match the HP rating of the machine with the transformer rating. Transformers are rated in kVA, while machines are usually rated in HP or kW.

To determine the right transformer size, we need to:

  1. Convert HP → kW

  2. Convert kW → kVA (considering power factor)

  3. Add a safety margin (20%)

  4. Select the next available standard transformer rating

Flowchart: Steps to Calculate Transformer Rating

Machine Rating (HP) ↓ Convert HP → kW (kW = HP × 0.746) ↓ Convert kW → kVA (kVA = kW ÷ PF) ↓ Apply Safety Margin (kVA × 1.2) ↓ Select Next Standard Transformer Rating

Step 1: Convert HP into kW

The standard conversion is:

1 HP=0.746 kW1 \, \text{HP} = 0.746 \, \text{kW}

For a 150 HP machine:

150×0.746=112 kW150 \times 0.746 = 112 \, \text{kW}

Step 2: Convert kW into kVA

Since the transformer is rated in kVA, and machines are usually inductive loads, we must consider the power factor (PF).

kVA=kWPower Factor\text{kVA} = \frac{\text{kW}}{\text{Power Factor}}

Assume PF = 0.8 (typical for motors and industrial loads):

1120.8=140 kVA\frac{112}{0.8} = 140 \, \text{kVA}

Step 3: Apply Safety Factor (20%)

To account for jerk loads, starting currents, and occasional overloads, we add 20% extra:

140×1.2=168 kVA140 \times 1.2 = 168 \, \text{kVA}

Step 4: Select the Next Standard Rating

Since 168 kVA is not a standard transformer size, we select the next higher available rating, which is:

✅ 200 kVA Transformer

Final Selection

For a 150 HP (112 kW) inductive machine, the 200 kVA transformer is suitable.

πŸ‘‰ This same method can be applied for any other machine rating by following the step-by-step approach.

General Formula

For quick calculation, you can use:

Transformer Rating (kVA)=HP×0.746Power Factor×1.2\text{Transformer Rating (kVA)} = \frac{\text{HP} \times 0.746}{\text{Power Factor}} \times 1.2

Maintenance of Window and Split air conditioners

Now days due to global pandemic there are people maintaining social distance from other people and people are carrying work at home. They are improving their skills by doing so they are reducing their cost of living as they are only using essential services for their living. They are carrying out following works at their own:-
(i)                  They are not using services of maids for routine cleaning works at their home
(ii)                They are cutting their hair at home only no need of barber these days.
(iii)               They are making eatable foods which are usually take from outside at their home, which makes the food healthier with same taste and contents.
(iv)              They are exploring their hobbies and generating taste in new hobbies
Now due to summer there is requirement of maintenance of air conditioners which are we usually take with the help of Air conditioners experts or by taking help of electricians as we thought that this work is of experts. But take my words maintenance of air conditioners is as simple as of cutting of your hairs.
There are following ways of carrying out maintenance of air conditioners:-
(i)                 Window Air conditioners:-
As clear from its name these air conditioners are the air conditioners which are installed in windows of houses and their maintenance is quite simple. We have to simply remove all the connections and we have to remove the air conditioner from its outer cover and air conditioner will look like as below:-

Now cover the compressor unit with polythene or by any-other means so that water doesn’t enter the compressor. Now prepare a liquid with the help of shampoo or surf and clean all the parts using that liquid and after applying foam on all parts clean it with water. After cleaning it with water keep the Air conditioner for drying up for few minutes and after drying the air conditioner same has to be re-installed in its cover and re-connect all the wire, make sure that connections are dried up. M30 Material calculations; bricks 1m3, Plastering 1m3 material calculations

Complete Guide to Brick, Plaster, Steel, and RCC Concrete Calculations

When working on construction projects—whether it’s a small residential building or a large-scale commercial project—accurate material estimation is essential. Civil engineers rely on standard formulas and ratios to calculate the number of bricks, quantity of plaster, steel reinforcement weight, and RCC concrete mix requirements.

In this guide, we will walk through step-by-step calculations for:

  • Brickwork estimation

  • Plastering requirements

  • Steel bar weight calculations

  • RCC concrete mix design (M15 to M30)

  • Cement, sand, and aggregate ratios with examples

These calculations are based on standard engineering practices and IS codes, ensuring that the results are both practical and reliable.

πŸ”Ή 1. Brickwork Calculations

Standard Brick Size in India

  • Nominal brick size: 190 mm × 90 mm × 90 mm

  • Volume of one brick:

Volume=0.19×0.09×0.09=0.001539 m3\text{Volume} = 0.19 \times 0.09 \times 0.09 = 0.001539 \, m^3

Number of Bricks in 1 m³ of Masonry

No. of bricks=10.001539≈650 bricks\text{No. of bricks} = \frac{1}{0.001539} \approx 650 \, \text{bricks}

➡️ Conclusion: For 1 cubic meter of brickwork, approximately 650 bricks are required (excluding mortar thickness).

πŸ”Ή 2. Plastering Calculations

Plaster Thickness

For a standard plaster thickness of 12 mm (0.012 m):

  • Volume of plaster per 1 m² area

1×1×0.012=0.012 m31 \times 1 \times 0.012 = 0.012 \, m^3

Mortar Density

  • Density of mortar = 2200 kg/m³

  • Mix ratio = 1:6 (Cement : Sand)

  • Sum of proportion = 7

Cement & Sand Required (for 1 m³ of mortar)

Cement=17×2200=315 kg\text{Cement} = \frac{1}{7} \times 2200 = 315 \, kg Sand=67×2200=1885 kg\text{Sand} = \frac{6}{7} \times 2200 = 1885 \, kg

For 1 m² Plaster Area

  • Cement = 0.012 × 315 = 3.78 kg

  • Sand = 0.012 × 1885 = 22.62 kg

➡️ Conclusion: To plaster 1 m² wall area (12 mm thick), you need approx. 3.8 kg cement and 22.6 kg sand.

πŸ”Ή 3. Steel Bar Weight Calculation

In RCC (Reinforced Cement Concrete) works, steel reinforcement plays a vital role. To calculate steel weight, civil engineers use a standard formula:

Formula

Weight (kg)=D2162.5×L\text{Weight (kg)} = \frac{D^2}{162.5} \times L

Where:

  • D = Diameter of bar (mm)

  • L = Length of bar (m)

Example – 12 mm Bar of 3 m Length

Weight=122162.5×3=2.65 kg\text{Weight} = \frac{12^2}{162.5} \times 3 = 2.65 \, kg

➡️ Conclusion: A 12 mm bar of 3 m weighs 2.65 kg.

Steel Grades

  • Fe415: Contains ~0.30% carbon

  • Fe415D & Fe415S: Improved ductility with max 0.25% carbon

  • Sulphur & Phosphorous content:

    • Fe415: Max 0.060%

    • Fe415D/S: Max 0.045%

    • Combined S+P: 0.110% (Fe415), 0.085% (Fe415D/S)

These chemical properties influence strength, ductility, and corrosion resistance in RCC works.

πŸ”Ή 4. RCC Concrete Mix Ratios

Concrete is classified by grades (M15, M20, M25, M30, etc.), where “M” denotes mix and number indicates compressive strength (N/mm²) after 28 days.

Nominal Mix Proportions

Grade

Cement : Sand : Aggregate

Cement (bags/m³)

Sand (cft)

Aggregate (cft)

6.75

14.75

29.14

M30

1:1.5:3

7.5–8

18.06

32.11

πŸ”Ή 5. Detailed Example: M30 Concrete Mix Design

Cement Density

  • Density of cement = 1440 kg/m³

  • Volume of 1 kg cement = 1/1440 = 0.00069 m³

  • Volume of 50 kg cement bag = 0.0347 m³

Sand & Aggregate Ratios

  • For M30 → Cement : Sand : Aggregate = 1 : 1.5 : 3

So, for 1 bag of cement (50 kg):

  • Sand volume = 0.0347 × 1.5 = 0.0521 m³

  • Aggregate volume = 0.0347 × 3 = 0.104 m³

Conversion to Weight

  • Sand weight = 0.0521 × 1600 = 83.33 kg

  • Aggregate weight = 0.104 × 1450 = 151.04 kg

➡️ Conclusion: 1 bag of cement requires 83.3 kg sand + 151 kg aggregate for M30 concrete.

Concrete Yield per Bag

  • Total concrete weight (cement + sand + aggregate + water) ≈ 312 kg

  • Density of concrete ≈ 2400 kg/m³

  • Volume of concrete from 1 bag ≈ 0.13 m³

Bags required for 1 m³=10.13≈7.7 bags\text{Bags required for 1 m³} = \frac{1}{0.13} \approx 7.7 \, bags

Thus, for 1 m³ of M30 concrete, you need:

  • 7.7 bags cement (~385 kg)

  • 641 kg sand

  • 1162 kg aggregate

πŸ”Ή 6. Alternative Cement-Sand-Aggregate Calculation

Another method uses the dry-to-wet factor (1.54):

  • Total ratio = 1 + 1.5 + 3 = 5.5

Cement

=1.54×15.5×1440=403.2 kg ≈8 bags= 1.54 \times \frac{1}{5.5} \times 1440 = 403.2 \, kg \, \approx 8 \, bags

Sand

=1.54×1.55.5×1600=672 kg= 1.54 \times \frac{1.5}{5.5} \times 1600 = 672 \, kg

Aggregate

=1.54×35.5×1450=1218 kg= 1.54 \times \frac{3}{5.5} \times 1450 = 1218 \, kg

➡️ Conclusion: This method confirms that approx. 8 bags of cement, 672 kg sand, and 1218 kg aggregate are needed for 1 m³ of M30 concrete.

πŸ”Ή 7. Density Reference Values

Material Density (kg/m³)
Cement 1440
Sand (loose) 1600
Aggregate 1450
Concrete 2400

These values are approximations and may vary depending on source, moisture content, and compaction.
