Nile River- Interesting Facts

 

In this article we will discuss about interesting facts about Nile River. This is most famous and most important river of Planet Earth. Below are few of the most interesting facts about this River: -

1.       This River is the longest river on Earth and it flows through 11 countries names of the same are: - Egypt, Sudan, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Congo, Kenya, Burundi, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Eritrea. Its total length is 6650 Km and it flows from African Great lakes through Sahara Desert and final emptying at Mediterranean Sea.

3.       It has two tributaries which are major tributaries names of the same are While Nile which begins at Jinja (Lake Victoria in Uganda) and Blue Nile which begins at Lake Tana in Ethiopia. Both the rivers meet at Khartoum which is capital of Sudan.

4.       The Blue Nile part is downstream and consists of 80% of water and silt and White Nile is the headwater stream.

5.       Nile river name has been taken from Greek word Neilos which means a River.



6.       From History Nile river is prime source of living for people. About 5000 years ago, Egyptian people were living here for fresh water, food and transportation on this this year.

10.   There is dam constructed on this river naming as The Aswan High Dam. This controls the flood of the river. This dam was built on 1960 to 1970. This dam is used to divert water for irrigation purposes and that water is used to irrigate 36000 square km of land.

11.   As per ancient Egyptians this River is gift of gods and termed “Egypt as gift of Nile”. They termed the God as Hapi, God of Nile.
